Good storage packing is less about wrapping everything twice and more about keeping belongings clean, dry, stable, and easy to find later.
Use sturdy boxes in a few sizes
Small boxes are best for books, tools, dishes, and other heavy items. Use larger boxes for linens, pillows, and lighter belongings. Boxes of similar sizes stack more safely than a collection of mismatched cartons.
Clean and dry everything first
Food residue, dirt, and moisture cause many storage problems. Vacuum upholstered furniture, wipe down hard surfaces, and allow every item to dry completely before packing it.
Wrap fragile pieces individually
Use packing paper or bubble wrap for dishes, glassware, lamps, and decorations. Fill empty space in the box so pieces cannot shift. Mark the box “fragile†and note which side should remain upright.
Take apart large furniture
Remove table legs and disassemble bed frames or shelving when practical. Put hardware in a labeled bag and attach it securely to the matching item. A quick photo before disassembly can make reassembly easier.
Label for retrieval, not just move-in day
Write the room and a short list of contents on at least two sides of each box. “Kitchen – baking pans and mixing bowls†is much more useful than “kitchen.†Keep a numbered inventory on your phone for a larger move.
Protect furniture appropriately
Use moving blankets or breathable furniture covers on wood and upholstered pieces. Mattress covers help keep mattresses clean. Avoid tightly sealing wood or leather in plastic for long-term storage.
Build a stable layout
Put heavy boxes on the bottom, lighter boxes above them, and leave a narrow aisle if you expect to visit the unit. Keep frequently needed items near the door.
Check before storing questionable items
Do not store food, fuel, explosives, flammable materials, or anything illegal. Ask our office before storing a vehicle, chemicals, or an item that requires controlled temperature or humidity.
